Hi there
There are plenty of exercises to choose from.
Overall you need to build stamina so running, cycling, rowing and swimming are the obvious choices here as you can do these in the gym.
A good weight training program is essential and the focus here is for strength and explosive power. However, you also need to mix in endurance training so there has to be a very good understanding of these key required elements when planning a program.
Using a skipping rope is great for stamina and also to improve the speed of your footwork. Doing double jumps will certainly help explosive power when jumping in and out of corners.
There are simple exercises that are brilliant for badminton and can be done in front of the tv. Simple grip changes from forehand to backhand grip are essential to improve skill. There are a number of armchair exercises which can be found on my blog www.badminton-coach.co.uk
Simple rebound jumping is also really good to strengthen the legs. Place 10 objects in a line with a space for you to jump inbetween. Starting at the end, jump with your feet close together, bringing your knees towards your chest. Jump in-between the objects until you get to the end. A few sets of these will really help.
Finally, good, structured practice is essential to improve badminton. This can be anything from serving practice to shadow movement where you almost have an imaginary game and you move to all corners of the court retrieving the shuttle. Serving practice is perhaps the best in terms of skill as many players do not practice the most important shot in the game. If you’ve got a very good, consistent serve then chances are it’s worth a good 5 points or more in a game. A poor serve ends the game very quickly.
Good luck.
