Hi there

A net kill is the term used to describe a shot in badminton when shuttle is hit onto the floor to end the rally and therefore win a point.

There are numerous types of shot that essentially do the same thing and “kill” the shuttle to win.

It’s difficult to describe how to play this shot without using video but here goes. ..

As with all net shots there is very little movement of the racket. In other words, no big swings.

You need to cock your wrist so that it is ready to snap forward to hit the shuttle. Extended your arm toward the shuttle and snap your wrist to hit the shuttle. When you hit, ideally you need to tap the shuttle so that the racket head does not follow the shuttle forward in case you hit the net.

Think about flicking a towel. The power comes from the flick back rather than a follow through. This is the same action you need with the net kill. Hitting power comes from the brief connection with the shuttle and the bounce back of the racket head.

Having re-read this description, I’ve come to the conclusion that pictures or video are required to ensure you get the right picture.

When the weather is cold most of the physical education classes will be moved indoors. When should you smash in a game of badminton?

by admin | No Comments | Filed in Training

Question by m.aster: When should you smash in a game of badminton?
When is the best time to smash in a game of badminton? Should you smash on a high serve that curves downward? Any other details would be great.

Best answer:

Answer by capricious
A smash must dip at a good inclination, otherwise it is useless. So, smashing is most effective when you are not too close to the back boundary line. (If you are too close to the back boundary line, you won’t get a good inclination).

Sport Court® Outdoor Game Surfacing Makes a Parking Lot Into a Playground at the Irvin Deutscher Family YMCA

Pleasant Hill, CA (PRWEB) May 4, 2008

The David C. Hayes Sport Court® Recreation Area is now in full play at the Irvin Deutscher Family YMCA in Pleasant Hill, California. Visit any day or evening and you’ll see a court filled with engaged and very spirited youth and teens involved in healthy and wholesome activities that range from volleyball, basketball and the very popular pickleball.

The Irvin Deutscher Family YMCA, in the heart of the Pleasant Hill community, has served the populations of Pleasant Hill, Martinez, Concord, Moraga, and Lafayette since 1968. After careful market research and strategic planning, the senior management and board of the YMCA committed to an extensive renovation of the facility, which includes a 4,500 square foot health and wellness center, nutritional teaching kitchen, and outdoor family Sport Court game court. An existing skate park and parking lot were torn down to accommodate the much needed court which features two basketball and volleyball courts and two badminton courts.

The new recreational area is named to memorialize David C. Hayes, a local college student that volunteered his time and energy with youth at the Y and who tragically passed away in a water accident. “The original skate park was named after this wonderful young man,” said Michael Erwin, president and CEO of the Mt. Diablo Region YMCA. “It is important for us to honor his memory and his legacy in a way that will continue to impact the lives of our children for generations to come.”

Sport Court of Northern California helped in the planning and then installed 14,480 square feet of playing area, all of it done in Sport Court brand’s colorful Power Game™ outdoor surface. The project included installation of four Professional SLAMS (Sport Court’s adjustable basketball system), eight Collegiate SLAMS, four sets of removable multi-sport net systems, two 50 foot by 84 foot basketball courts, two volleyball courts, a badminton court and a pickle ball court. Pole lighting was also included so it could be used at night for teens and adults. “Our PowerGame all-weather suspended sport surface was ideal for this site,” said Jerry Abercrombie, vice president for marketing of Sport Court Northern California. “It has outstanding traction and performance and its colors hold up even after years of sunlight,” continued Abercrombie. “It’s probably the largest single installation we have done in northern California.”

“We were looking for a company that understood what our needs were and could respond with a product that would stand up to the test of time,” said Erwin. “That’s why we chose Sport Court. They achieved all our goals and it is a very popular addition not only to our YMCA but to our entire community.”

While initial planning began in November of last year, the construction was completed within a two week period and the grand opening celebration took place on Saturday, March 15, with hundreds of community participants and YMCA members enjoying free sports clinics and a BBQ. With the David C. Hayes Sports Court in full swing, the YMCA is now the community hub where youth and teens can participate in cohesive physical after-school and weekend activities. Basketball, volleyball and badminton clinics and leagues will provide children and teens engaging activities so that they are not simply hanging out without a place to go.

The Irvin Deutscher Family YMCA annually serves over 15,000 youth, teens and adults and when the entire renovation is completed, the Y will reach an estimated 25,000 community members a year. For information on the YMCA, including membership and program activities at the David C. Hayes Sports Recreation Area, please contact the Irvin Deutscher Family YMCA at 925.687.8900 or visit mdrymca.org.

Brief Background
Name of the game has been derived from the Badminton House which was the seat of the Duke of Beaufort where the family and friends of the duke got involved in the game in the 19th century. Though the actual origin of the game is still controversial, historians point out that a similar game was played around two thousand years ago in China. However, the common consensus is that the game developed from the children game named battledore and shuttlecock.

A part from the net towards the court is the area where if the shuttle falls during service, it will be fault. There is also a rectangular base area at the end of the court and if served shuttle lands there it would be fault. Remaining part of the court is divided into two parts, a left and right court.
Some of the basic features of the game are that only the serving player or side can score a point. Usually the games are of 11, 15, or 21 points. Match is usually of best of three games and players switch sides after each game during the first two and halfway during the third.

Badminton Net: Various Net Plays You can Learn to Improve Your Game

By: Wayne Nusbaum

]]>

In the sport of badminton, badminton net play is an essential area that demands both power and finesse from the player for flawless execution. With just a flick of the wrist, a player can send his opponent scrambling back. With a quick change in the racket face’s angle, you can send your adversary falling to the ground. Being able to defeat your opponent not due to smashing deliveries but through delicate shots gives a more satisfying victory.

Basically, there three different types of net play:

1.    Net kill – this is played when your adversary has played a loose shot over the net making an opportunity for you to strike down the shuttle from the net area. For this play, you must hold the racket head high enough to take the shuttle above the level of the net. To deliver this seamlessly, you have to be quick to the net. There is a risk of you hitting the net so when you play this, use only your wrist with minimal to no racket arm movement. Make your racket rebound back as soon as you make contact with the shuttle to secure against a follow through.
2.    Net shot – this is played from around the net area back to your adversary’s net area. This play intends to force your adversary hit shots that could not clear the net or hit a weak lift. When played well, this shot is really hard to return by any standards. This badminton net play can be played on the backhand and forehand sides, straight or cross court.
3.    Net lift – this is an underarm clear played from around the net area which is usually used when you have to create more time for yourself or perhaps to move your adversary to the back court. Depending on your adversary’s position, you can hit it higher or flatter and it can be played cross court or straight down the line. With this badminton net play, you can deceive your opponent by moving forward and delivering a shot similar to a net shot. However, before striking the shuttle, loosen your wrist and send the shuttle through to your adversary’s back court. Disguise it well and your adversary will surely have a hard time recovering.

Net plays are an essential area in badminton that requires time for one to gain expertise on it. Master these shots and you’ll be able to deceive your adversaries and win effortlessly.

Where can i play a competitive game of badminton in Illinois?

Question by DebraKay: Where can i play a competitive game of badminton in Illinois?
I am in High school and my school doesn’t have a Badminton team, i absolutely love the game and am good at it, i’d love to know where i could play it in Illinois.

Best answer:

Answer by Meg K
I’m also an Illinois high school student who loves to play badminton. My school doesn’t have a team, but we started a competetive club. We have tournaments and different matches at badminton club, and we might host an all-city tournament inviting students from other schools to play. Perhaps you can start a badminton club. If that’s not possible or what you are looking for, I posted a link below for the Midwest Badminton Association. There is a link on the website called “Where to play” with different badminton leagues and clubs in Illinois. Check it out! ;)
